Thompson Rivers University has many perks, and it is truly impossible for me to narrow down my favorite things about our campus. Due to the fact I have an incurable case of indecisiveness, I have decided to do a series talking about my general favorite things about TRU. I hope by the end of this series I have listed everything available on campus because my most favorite thing about TRU is TRU. For now, here are some of my current picks:
TRU’s Location
Kamloops is a beautiful city located in the southern interior of British Columbia, central to many major cities. For example, Kelowna is about two hours away and Vancouver is about a 4-hour trip (depending on traffic and construction). As well, Kamloops has many outdoor opportunities, such as mountain biking and hiking trails, camping destinations, Sun Peaks Resort, lakes and rivers, etc. Even if the outdoors isn’t your style, Kamloops has a lot more to offer. Additionally, the location of the TRU campus is quite central within the city, and there are many useful amenities within a 5-to-10-minute walk.
TRU’s Sustainability Efforts
TRU has many core values, and sustainability is one of them; this link to the TRU website says it all. Seeing the efforts our campus takes to preserve the future environment makes me proud to be a TRU student.
TRU’s Indigenization Initiatives
Another focus of TRU is the acknowledgement, appreciation, and implementation of Indigenous culture and history. It is important for TRU to acknowledge that their campuses are on the traditional lands of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (Kamloops campus) and the T’exelc (Williams Lake campus) within Secwépemc’ulucw, the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc. Our region also extends into the territories of the St’át’imc, Nlaka’pamux, Nuxalk, Tŝilhqot’in, Dakelh, and Syilx peoples. Check out this TRU website to learn more.
TRU’s Student Services
TRU offers several different services and opportunities to students. These services are here to support you, and it is important to take advantage of what is being offered. My favourite student service is “Academic Supports”, specifically “Accessibility Services”. Check out this TRU website, there are 9 tabs packed with loads of helpful information.
