Open House is a full day event at Thompson Rivers University where we open up the campus and welcome future students and the community to explore university life. This event is put on by the Future Students Office with support from many other TRU departments. In the Future Students Office has ten full-time staff and there are also ten ambassadors (current students) that work together to help bring this event to life.

While Open House is a one day event, it takes months to plan the fun that will bring us all together. As a Future Student Ambassador, we mark our calendars as soon as the date is decided and start counting down the days. In the weeks leading up to Open House, we plan and create content for you to view. This is always a lot of fun because we get to collaborate, be creative, and get the community excited about Open House. We’re also put to work with some of the event prep, like coordinating swag bags for guests.

After counting down the days, Open House finally arrives and we get to welcome you to our beautiful TRU campus! As an Ambassador, we spend the whole day on campus setting up, leading tours, answering questions, helping where needed, and cleaning up at the end. We start setting up with Future Students Office staff and volunteers at least an hour before the event starts to make sure everything is in place. When people arrive on campus, that’s when the excitement starts and we begin handing out coffee and donuts (yes, they’re free!). We call this Coffee, Carbs, and Conversation and it’s a great way to warm up and kick off the start of a super exciting day ahead.

Throughout the day, the Ambassadors have assigned tasks to help the event proceed as planned and make sure guests get the most out of Open House. We get to lead campus tours and talk on the Student Panel, which was the highlight for me during the Spring Open House. Above all, we are there to answer your questions about student life, inspire you on your post secondary journey, and welcome you into the TRU community. This is your opportunity to explore our campus; meet faculty, staff, and students; and immerse yourself in TRU culture, so take advantage of everything Open House has to offer. I’ve heard there are over 100 booths, displays, and hands-on experiences to choose from!

Open House is a day to bring your family and friends and experience as much as you can! With over 140 programs available at TRU and 250 acres of beautiful campus, we have plenty to share with you.

If you haven’t already, make sure you register. This will give you access to our Open House app, the ability to submit your questions for the Student Panel, and enter you in the draw to win a full semester’s tuition credit at Open House!

We can’t wait to see you at this year’s Open House on Saturday, October 21st!
